        Senior Member, Tech (QS Dev)

        Front Office Tech
        Hyderabad or Gurugram

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled software developer to join our QS Dev team in Hyderabad/Gurugram, a specialized technology group responsible for developing and supporting the computing infrastructure that underpins the D. E. Shaw group’s quantitative trading and research. The team builds and maintains a range of software solutions — including an HPC scheduler, service manager, and a next-generation, language-agnostic package, container, and environment manager — to support both on-premises and cloud-based compute environments. QS Dev partners closely with Quant Systems and quantitative researchers to design, implement, and optimize scalable technology that serves as the foundation for many of the firm’s most sophisticated trading strategies and analytics.

        What you’ll do day-to-day

In this role, you will design, build, and maintain high-performance compute and infrastructure solutions to support the firm’s quantitative trading and research activities. You will develop, enhance, and support core platforms such as HPC schedulers, service managers, and tools for package, environment, and container management. By collaborating closely with quantitative researchers, Quant Systems, and other engineering teams, you will gather requirements and deliver scalable, reliable solutions. You will also research and implement new technologies, frameworks, and optimizations to continually improve system performance, efficiency, and reliability. The role will also involve troubleshooting and resolving issues across both on-premises and cloud-based compute environments. Additionally, you will contribute to automation and process improvements to increase productivity and reduce operational risk. Lastly, you will document designs, best practices, and operational procedures to ensure maintainability and effective knowledge sharing within the team.

        Who we’re looking for

        Basic qualifications:

        • Exceptional expertise with Nix: Nix expressions, Nixpkgs, flakes, overlays, and advanced dependency management, along with the ability to debug and extend complex builds at scale
        • Elite Linux skills: Deep command line proficiency; fluency in filesystems, permissions, process management, shells, networking, and kernel concepts
        • Problem-solving/Critical Thinking skills: Genuine enthusiasm and talent for untangling the thorniest technical issues — backed by a track record of building foundational software systems
        • Programming mastery: Advanced software engineering experience with highly robust code in at least one of Go, Rust, or Python, along with a degree of comfort with shell scripting and automation
        • Production backend experience: At least 2 years designing, building, and operating large-scale or mission-critical backend systems
        • Database expertise: Advanced skills designing, optimizing, and troubleshooting relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.)
        • Observability skills: Deep experience with monitoring, tracing, and debugging — ideally including Prometheus and OpenTelemetry
        • Security and Infrastructure experience: Demonstrated rigor in infrastructure and application security, Linux system hardening, and compliance-conscious development
        • Distributed Systems acumen: Working knowledge of event-driven/messaging systems (Kafka, or similar)
        • Collaboration and Communication skills: The ability to convey deep technical ideas simply, mentor others, and work effectively in a highly technical, distributed team
        • Bias for Action: Self-driven, proactive, organized, and relentless in solving the right problems

        Preferred qualifications:

        • Contributions to open-source Nix projects or to similar ecosystem tools
        • Familiarity with containers (Docker, Podman) and cross-platform packaging
        • Deep experience with CI/CD automation (Nix or reproducible build systems)
        • Experience at high-growth startups, or with developer/platform tools
        • A background in automating development, build, and deployment workflows end-to-end
