Who We Are
While Dr. Shaw remains involved in certain higher-level strategic decisions affecting the investment management businesses of the D. E. Shaw group, its day-to-day operations are overseen by the D. E. Shaw group's Executive Committee. The vast majority of his time is now devoted to his role as chief scientist of D. E. Shaw Research, LLC, in which capacity he leads an interdisciplinary research group in the field of computational biochemistry and personally engages in hands-on scientific research in that field. He also holds appointments as a Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics at Columbia University and as an Adjunct Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Columbia's medical school.
Dr. Shaw received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1980 and served on the faculty of the Computer Science Department at Columbia University until 1986, when he left to pursue the emerging field of computational finance. He initiated his work on computational biochemistry in 2001, began building the scientific team at D. E. Shaw Research in 2002, and resumed his affiliation with Columbia in 2005.
Dr. Shaw was appointed to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology by President Clinton in 1994, and again by President Obama in 2009. He is a two-time winner of the ACM Gordon Bell Prize, and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007, to the National Academy of Engineering in 2012, and to the National Academy of Sciences in 2014.
The D. E. Shaw group was founded in 1988 by . Our Hyderabad office opened in 1996 with 20 employees and is now home to a large part of the group’s global workforce. D. E. Shaw India has grown to be a critical part of the group’s investment management activities, providing strategic support and impacting business outcomes through deep domain expertise and cutting-edge technology.
Since our inception as a technological development center, we’ve expanded our business into a broad range of software and financial activities.
In 2023, we opened offices in Bengaluru and Gurugram, while remaining central to the information technology industry in Hyderabad, our primary hub.

Chaitanya Gorrepati is a managing director of the D. E. Shaw group and a member of its Corporate Social Responsibility Committee. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of D. E. Shaw India. Mr. Gorrepati has oversight responsibility for D. E. Shaw India’s Financial Operations and Corporate Functions (Finance, Legal and Compliance, Human Capital, and Administration) groups. Prior to joining the firm in 2011, he held positions at Microsoft, UBS, and GE. Mr. Gorrepati is a qualified Chartered Accountant.
Charitra Mehta is a managing director of the D. E. Shaw group and a member of the Board of Directors of D. E. Shaw India. In addition, Mr. Mehta is a strategic advisor on D. E. Shaw India’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. He joined the firm in 1999 and has been pivotal in building the D. E. Shaw group’s financial research capabilities in India. Mr. Mehta holds a master’s degree in business economics from D.A.V.V., Indore.
Lakshmi Prasad Koneti is a managing director of the D. E. Shaw group and leads D. E. Shaw India’s Technology team, which includes Core Technology for systematic and discretionary trading strategies, Enterprise Infrastructure, and Systems. He joined the firm in 1999 and has been responsible for the development and delivery of various products in Enterprise Infrastructure (solutions for new business ventures, firmwide workflow systems, and web infrastructure) and Financial Technology (deal management solutions for private equity businesses and compliance). Mr. Koneti holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati.

As a firm, D. E. Shaw India is involved in various philanthropic projects. We engage in a variety of medium and long-term partnerships with NGOs that are innovative, sustainable, and impactful. Among our philanthropic projects: we’ve encouraged social innovation by incubating an early stage non-profit startup, transformed five government schools for underprivileged children into centers of excellence, funded a multidisciplinary center for children with special needs, and enabled dropout students to complete their secondary education through a “Second Chance” center.

Sustainability
We've been purchasing voluntary emissions reductions (VERs) for more than 15 years, in an attempt to offset the carbon footprint of our day-to-day business operations.
We’re committed to environmental sustainability and have prioritized energy efficiency at our facilities. Our India offices have been built to meet LEED Gold or Platinum certification standards. We were awarded an Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Platinum certification for Operations and Maintenance, and we have a four-star rating from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power, in recognition of our energy conservation practices.
